ABOUT THE PROJECT

With recent grads competing with young professionals for jobs, competition for entry-level positions is stiff. Especially with the COVID-19 slowdown, college grads are meant to have a hopeful time finding employment but are greeted with stress and fear. There is a myth that if you have a college degree, you have a job. The fact is, that approximately 53% of college graduates are unemployed or working in a job that doesn't require a bachelor's degree.* Networking before graduation is one vital way to help college grads reach better job opportunities.

Due to grads having a statistically harder time getting their first job, I wanted to create an application that would help them find a way to transition seamlessly from school to the workforce. With the help of the organization, FutureMap, I created a way to connect college students with professionals looking to mentor or recruit entry-level positions. The purpose of this was to help students gain their confidence, footing, and overall knowledge of their career field beyond the walls of their alma mater.

Below shows a brief overview of the process:

Introduction

Project Summary

Identify an organization in need of focused attention. Find why the chosen organization needs assistance and in what ways you can be of service to them as a planner, conceptualizer, user centric designer, form maker, storyteller and inventor. Turn their existing situation into a preferred one by creating a meaningful, significant, adaptive and durable solution to the challenge you have pinpointed.

The Client

FutureMap is a nonprofit helping first generation college graduates navigate early career moves.  Their volunteers are successful professionals who are passionate about leveling the playing field.

They work with professionals to help students and graduates prepare for the job hunt. They have a deep understanding of the challenges faced by first-generation and low-income students and work to support professional development and help reach student’s full potential.

The Challenge

What's the issue?

College students who feel unprepared and reluctant towards joining the workforce after graduation need to be able to talk to others they feel comfortable with, to get ready for interviews, job fairs, etc., but are not sure where to begin their professional networking journey.

I believe creating a system specifically for college students that helps prepare them for networking, gaining connections and professional relationships before graduation, will help their job readiness and overall chances of getting their desired job.

What's the Scope, Goals & Measurements of Success?

To breakdown the wide variety of directions I could go with this, I wanted to make sure the data I received spoke for itself, and was justified in my design. I planned to survey college students in order to further understand their desires and fears when it came to networking.

My overall goal for this project was to be able to impact a student’s life by getting them motivated to begin building professional relationships. I also aimed to build a system for those who were unsure where to start networking, and give them a platform where they feel comfortable talking to professionals and mentors.

I measured the rate of success in this project using qualitative and quantitative KPI‘s (Key Performance Indicators) to gain insight into the overall satisfaction of the users in my final design.

For the scope of this project I wanted to be able to impact the lives of college students through a mobile networking application, but due to certain limitations and restrictions, I had to set realistic expectations.

I worked on this project for a total of 3.5 months, and during this time I had a very low to almost non-existing budget for this proposal. Due to this, I knew my ending result would be a series of screens prototyped, (not developed or animated) well evolved enough to be able to test and measure the impact it might have on college student, to determine if they would use this application in the future to begin their networking career.

The Research

Initial Findings
As of May 2020, according to ZipRecruiter data, the number of entry level job openings, which are typically filled by recent college grads, has fallen by 73%, with internship opportunities taking a similar dive.*

85%

89%

19.2%

of all jobs are found through networking and relations.*
of recruiters have hired someone through LinkedIn*
of college students (18-24 years old) use LinkedIn.*
The Target Users / Personas
College students need to be able to network with professionals so that they can grow in confidence and learn more about how to prepare for the workforce.

Therefore, the users I will intend to design for will be college students, specifically those about to graduate, and especially for those who are first-generation college students and need focused guidance on navigating the workplace.
The Survey & Analysis
To dive deeper into college students’ relationship with networking, I created a survey to uncover which demographics of people were more likely to network and why.

The goal of the survey was to find out the comfort level college students currently have when dealing with networking and see how they maintain those professional relationships. I also wanted to see if they personally believed if networking was beneficial or necessary to them and if they saw their college as being a crucial part of setting them up for real life world and work experiences.
The Survey Results:
Many people who completed the survey knew networking was beneficial since they were able to get jobs through it, however the majority did not feel comfortable in interviews or know exactly where to start in terms of gaining professional networks. Below shows one main statistic that really captured my attention:
What are the main reasons that hold college students back from professional networking more?

The Design

The Moodboard & Inspiration
The Sketches
During my sketching phase, I drew out all my thoughts I had for each of the screens I had planned, and wrote notes in the margins to remind myself later of the thoughts tumbling around in my mind.
The Wireframes

The Testing

User Flow Tasks
In order to understand the faults and imperfections my design had, I needed to do some user testing. I asked a various amount of participants to do a series of tasks that included:
1. Login
2. Find your account page
3. Find where to go for lessons on networking
4. Enroll in an upcoming event
5. Bookmark a recommended job
6. Chat with a professional
7. Find a professionals profile
First Round of Testing Results
Many were unsure where to find everyone that they connected with and wanted a localized “my network” page. Otherwise, they completed the majority of the tasks.
KPI Testing - Task Success
For the KPI testing I chose to conduct 2 forms of testing that would show the qualitative and quantitative metrics of the hi-fi design.

This testing shows the percentage of participants that have successfully completed a specific task on the first try. For reference, i was able to test 10 people.

The Solution

The Hi-Fidelity Prototype
The high-fidelity prototype I finalized, it a cumulation of the entirety of my research, ideation and design development. It works to allow users to have a 5 key points of networking access and learning:

The Handbook: A quick guide for those who need an overview on  interview prep and etiquette

The Events: To showcase upcoming networking events or experiences tailored to their specific goals/career field.

The Discover Page: Reveals a number of professionals ready to connect with in your area or with similar interests, college, etc.

The Job Finder: Displays jobs recommended to you that fit your overall career goals.

The Chat Function: A way to connect and maintain professional relationships.
Final Takeaways
With only 3.5 months to work on this project, there was still more I could work on to flesh out this entire application.

1. Do more testing
2, Create a job detail page and network page
3. Add animations
4. Add the sign-in quiz that caters the discover page to each person
